1. Replace a portion of water with milk

Instead of mixing it with water, replace half the quantity of H20 with any kind of milk to add richness and thicken the protein shake. Some milk, like soy or almond, come with a distinct nuttiness that works well with chocolate protein shakes.

2. Make a yoghurt protein mix

For someone who enjoys thicker beverages, mix some yoghurt into your shake. Vanilla or fruit-based yoghurts bring a nice sweetness to the protein shake as well. Use a blender instead of a shaker to mix if you're particular to the errant lump in your drink.

4. Blend the shake with oatmeal

Put a twist to your morning bowl of oatmeal. Steel cut oats have about 7g of protein per 1/4 cup, and do well with being blended into a protein shake. It makes for a heartier drink too, or a filling snack. Steel cut oatmeal also has a low glycemic index, allowing for a slow release of energy which will power you through an intensive workout. Mix with a teaspoon of cocoa powder, honey, or peanut butter for more flavour.

5. Incorporate powdered orange juice

This is best with vanilla protein powder. Add a scoop of powdered orange juice to the drink before shaking it up, and it'll cut through whey protein's slightly overpowering taste. It'll also taste like a creamsicle. If you can't find powder, you can also use orange juice.
