Cellucor has a reputation for creating top-of-the-line pre-workout formulations. Their C4 is extremely popular, attaining the number one spot on many pre-workout rankings, including our own LiveFit.Asia Best of 2016 list. But Cellucor has an expanded range that includes whey protein, and their mass gainer Cor-Performance Gainer is another potential award winner waiting in the wings.
Mass gainers are known to be high in calories and carbohydrates to serve the purpose of helping you gain mass. Cor-Performance Gainer, on the other hand, chooses to stay away from going down the super-high calorie route, and instead offers a lower-calorie, protein-rich option for easy gainers.
Here's all you need to know about Cor-Performance Gainer.
WHAT'S IN IT
Each serving of Cor-Performance Gainer delivers 340 calories, 60g of protein, 80g of carbohydrates, 5g of creatine monohydrates, and BCAAs. The main ingredients are a protein blend comprising whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate, milk protein isolate, micellar casein, egg white albumin, and whey protein hydrolysate. There's maltodextrin and sweet potato powder for carbs as well.
Whey protein concentrate is an extremely common form of whey protein found in most protein shakes. It has an 80% purity, and contains lactose, fat and carbohydrates in small doses.
Whey protein isolate is a further purified version of whey protein concentrate, with less lactose, fat and carbohydrates. Because of this filtration process, whey protein isolate is far more easily absorbed into your bloodstream, making this a favourite of intermediate gainers who prefer a low carb option.
Milk protein isolate is derived from skimmed milk. It's 90% protein, and is commonly used as a flavour enhancer in products that require the taste of milk, like yoghurts, cereals and protein powder.
Micellar casein is casein that has gone through added filtration. It has a higher level of purity, and its main function is to deliver a sustained dose of amino acids throughout your system for an extended period of time. It clings to your stomach lining, taking up to six hours to digest, and also prevents muscle breakdown.
Egg white albumin is the white of an egg. It contains 11g of protein per 100g, and has all the amino acids your body requires, such as alanine, isoleucine, arginine, lysine and more.
Whey protein hydrolysate is whey protein at peak purity. It doesn't get any more refined, and easily digestible than this. Hydrolysates are made by exposing the amino acids to heat or enzymes, and the result is a partially digested form of whey protein that hits your bloodstream running the minute you ingest it. However, it only works marginally quicker than whey protein isolate or concentrate, and tends to taste bitter in high concentrations.
Maltodextrin is a simple sugar derived from corn, potato and rice. It causes a spike in your sugar levels, and is the most common carb booster in mass gainers. Sweet potato powder is the second carb source in Cor-Performance Gainer. It is a more complex carbohydrate, therefore releasing energy slowly into your bloodstream and preventing a sugar spike.
FLAVOURS AND TASTE
Cellucor is known for having delicious flavours, and the Performance Gainer is no exception. It's available in two no-frills flavours: chocolate and vanilla. Both are milky, rich and all round tasty to drink.
HOW YOU SHOULD TAKE IT
Take a scoop of Cor-Performance Gainer and mix it with 6 oz. cold water or milk, if you prefer more flavour. Shake it up and enjoy. No matter your caloric requirement, you shouldn't exceed four servings a day. Most people typically take one to two. Given the mix of slow and fast releasing ingredients that make up Cor-Performance Gainer, its best taken first thing in the morning or as a post-workout. There's no hard rule as to when you should take a mass gainer, though.
Cor-Performance Gainer is priced at $59 for 28 servings, which is an excellent price. You're also getting a bunch of quality nutrients like casein and BCAAs with just one serving of this, and those would usually have to be purchased separately, hence costing more.
WHO SHOULD TAKE IT
At 340 calories per serving, Cor-Performance Gainer is not at the top of the high calorie game. It is, however, rich in protein and highly comparable to most hard-hitting mass gainers, and is also relatively low in fat and carbs. This is perhaps the best option for builders who are looking to improve their physique casually by gaining more lean mass, instead of for serious hard gainers looking to bulk, and bulk fast.
